Everything You Need to Know About Chemical Peels
By Jake Howard, Licensed Master Esthetician • October 28, 2025
A chemical peel is a professional skin-treatment using a specialized acid solution to exfoliate the outer layers of your skin. With controlled and precise application, the old, damaged cells are gently removed so your skin can renew itself: smoother texture, more even tone, and improved barrier resilience.
How do chemical peels work?
The peeling solution loosens the bonds between dead skin cells so they shed more quickly.
As the top layers are removed, your skin naturally produces new cells and collagen — meaning improved firmness, texture, and clarity.
At our studio we customise acid type, strength, and layering based on your skin’s condition, tone, and goals.
The benefits of chemical peels
At Rocky Mountain Skin, our chemical peels are designed to:
Improve texture and minimize fine lines and wrinkles.
Fade sun-spots, pigmentation, and uneven tone.
Clear congested pores and reduce visible acne scarring.
Strengthen the skin barrier — so your products and routine perform better.
Reveal a glow-refreshed complexion faster than standard exfoliants.
Who is a good candidate?
Most skin types can benefit from chemical peels — but suitability and complexion safety require a professional assessment:
Your skin tone, history of pigmentation, scarring risk, and active skin conditions all matter.
If you’re using certain medications (like isotretinoin), have untreated acne or infection, or recent sun‐burn or tan, your peel plan may need modification.
We perform a thorough consultation to match your skin to the correct peel strength and after-care plan.
Depth categories & what they mean
Superficial (Light): Mild acid, minimal downtime. Targets include dull tone, mild texture changes.
Medium (Stronger acid): may have visible flaking. Targets pigmentation, moderate lines, acne scars.
Deep (Highest strength): significant recovery required. Targets severe sun damage, deep wrinkles, major scarring. *Requires Doctor Admistration
What to expect before & during your peel
Pre-treatment includes prepping the skin: avoid excessive sun, stop harsh exfoliants or retinoids as advised.
On treatment day: we cleanse, protect sensitive areas, apply the peel solution uniformly, monitor your comfort and skin response.
You may feel warmth or tingling during application. The stronger the peel, the more sensation and visible aftermath.
Aftercare & recovery
Immediately after: your skin may look pink/red, feel tight. For deeper peels, flaking, swelling, or visible shedding is normal.
Use gentle, hydrating skincare in the kit provided. Avoid active exfoliants, retinoids, scrubs until cleared.
Daily broad-spectrum SPF is non-negotiable. Peels increase UV sensitivity and risk for pigmentation.
Follow-up treatments and maintenance are key to lasting results — we’ll design your plan specifically.
