What Happens In Your First Facial?
By Jake Howard, Licensed Master Esthetician • August 29, 2025
Walking into your first facial can feel a little intimidating. You’re laying down in a dimly lit room, soft music playing, a stranger about to examine your pores… what exactly did you sign up for again? Don’t worry. Let me take you behind the scenes of what really happens during your first appointment, step by step.
The Welcome + The Chat
The appointment starts with a conversation, not a cleanser. You sit down, and we talk through your skin story—what products you’ve tried, what’s worked, what hasn’t, and what you’re hoping to achieve. Maybe you’re dealing with breakouts, maybe you just want to glow for your wedding, or maybe you just need a little me-time. Whatever your “why,” I want to hear it.
The Detective Work
Once you’re tucked into the treatment bed (yes, it’s cozy), I take a closer look at your skin. This isn’t about judgment—it’s about data. I’m mapping out your skin type, conditions, and what’s really going on beneath the surface. Think of it like a mechanic looking under the hood before making any fixes.
The Double Cleanse
Now the fun part begins. I’ll start with a double cleanse: one round to remove the day—makeup, sunscreen, city grime—and a second round to actually clean your skin. This step alone feels luxurious, but it’s also critical. Clean skin means every product that follows can do its job better.
The Reset: Exfoliation + Extractions
Depending on your skin, this step might involve a gentle exfoliant to whisk away dead cells, or some pore extractions if congestion is the main villain. This is the “spring cleaning” moment for your face. Your skin gets a reset so it can finally breathe.
The Star of the Show: Mask + Massage
Here’s where the treatment turns indulgent. I’ll choose a mask tailored to your skin’s needs—hydrating, clarifying, brightening, calming. While the mask works its magic, you’ll usually get a relaxing massage for your scalp, neck, or shoulders. Clients often say this is the moment they forget they’re in a spa and not on a beach somewhere.
Locking It In: Finishing Products
We wrap things up by talking through what I saw in your skin, how it responded, and what will help you keep improving. This might mean sending you home with a new product or booking your next session. My goal? Making sure you leave confident, clear on what’s happening with your skin, and excited for the journey ahead.
Then comes checkout, rebooking (if you’re ready), and the best part—walking out with skin that looks and feels brand new. Most clients tell me they can’t stop touching their face (pro tip: try to resist).
The Takeaway
Your first facial isn’t scary—it’s a reset button, a lesson, and a mini-vacation all in one. You’ll leave knowing more about your skin, what it needs, and how to care for it—and you’ll glow while doing it.
So, if you’ve been waiting for the “right time” to try your first facial, this is it. Your best skin is waiting..*
